New Workshop

You are Not Alone. A workshop for seniors caring for seniors.
Are you a senior who is providing care to another senior - spouse  sibling, parent, or friend?  Then you know that   caregiving can be both rewarding and challenging. We don't want you to "go it alone."
Do you know seniors who are providing care to another senior? Then you might want to support them in their caregiving journey.

This workshop is sponsored by the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre, an initiative of the Canadian Council on Learning.
The workshop is based in part on research by Dr. Beth Perry and Dr. Margaret Edwards, Center for Nursing and Health Studies, Athabasca University.

Maureen has presented keynote addresses to public and professional audiences and welcomes the opportunity to share her knowledge and experience.

For a complete list and description of presentations, review her portfolio.

  • Adaptive Aging
  • Boomers and their Aging Parents
  • Connection and Forgiveness in Later Life
  • Mindful Aging
  • Strong Enough to say "No" & Wise Enough to say "Yes"
  • SMART Conversations

Some topics are described below:

 Adaptive Aging

  • understand terminology and jargon related to healthcare
  • identify types of services
  • know how to find the services you need
  • explore ways to bridge the "new" generation gap between aging parents and adult children

Aging Boomers and Their Aging Parents

As Baby Boomers turn 50 and 60, their parents are entering their seventies and eighties! Many of these older adults need more support. How can the Sandwich generation balance the demands of work and family life with their increasing concerns for aging parents?

Maureen will explain:

  • How to proactively plan for the future with your parents
  • How to offer your help and support
  • Strategies for long-distance care-giving
  • How to take care of yourself

Connection and Forgiveness in Later Life

Many people put off even thinking about their aging parents because of childhood hurt and adult discord. Further, seniors wonder if they can ask for help from adult children who sometimes feel like strangers. Even after years of disagreement, reconciliation is possible.

Maureen will explain:

  • The difference between "forgiving" and "forgetting"
  • How to develop realistic goals for the adult child/aging parent relationship
  • Ways to make agreements when faced with unresolved issues
  • Ways to achieve insight and move on!

 Creating Caring Communities

"It takes a community to support a senior." Maureen Osis

Seniors' housing is more than a building. It should also be a home. Our home is the place that gives us a sense of belonging.
How can staff and administration and owners of seniors' housing create caring communities that help set them apart?

One way to achieve the goal is to understand "social capital", which can be broadly defined as the resources available to individuals and groups through their social connections to their communities. Social capital is one of the keys to successful aging and is related to resident satisfaction.

Through discussion and case examples we will:

  • Define and discuss social capital, social networks, and social support
  • Explore the importance of social relationships among residents
  • Provide strategies that foster both internal and external social connections

Audience: staff, administrators, and owner/operators of seniors' housing residences.

Should I Move in with my Children?

When life takes an unexpected turn, our options are altered. For seniors, widowhood or a health-related crisis may precipitate a change in living arrangements.

Maureen will explain:

  • The qualities that allow families to live well in intergenerational households
  • How to decide if this living arrangement is right for you

      SMART Conversations
How often do you find yourself saying -
"Why won't my parents listen to me?"
"How do I get them to do what I want?"

This session presents a new look at an old problem - communicating. You will learn how to influence someone that you care about.  You will learn tips on handling conversations about difficult topics. This presentation will help adult children who worry about parents who are doing things - or not doing things - that cause concern.
