Age Denying or Age Defying?

Canada has almost 10 million Baby Boomers - those born between 1947 and 1964. This demographic has grown up with the information and opportunity to be healthier than their parents, and as they age, they want their appearance to reflect their youthful energy. Can aging be defied? Should aging be denied?

Maureen will explain:

  • What you need to incorporate into your lifestyle to defy age
  • How to gracefully age physically, mentally and emotionally

Boomers and Their Aging Parents

As Baby Boomers turn 50 and 60, their parents are entering their seventies and eighties! Many of these older adults need more support. How can the Sandwich generation balance the demands of work and family life with their increasing concerns for aging parents?

Maureen will explain:

  • How to proactively plan for the future with your parents
  • How to offer your help and support
  • Strategies for long-distance care-giving
  • How to take care of yourself

Connection and Forgiveness in Later Life

Many people put off even thinking about their aging parents because of childhood hurt and adult discord. Further, seniors wonder if they can ask for help from adult children who sometimes feel like strangers. Even after years of disagreement, reconciliation is possible.

Maureen will explain:

  • The difference between "forgiving" and "forgetting"
  • How to develop realistic goals for the adult child/aging parent relationship
  • Ways to make agreements when faced with unresolved issues
  • Ways to achieve insight and move on!

Health and Housing

With the physical and lifestyle changes that occur with aging, some individuals decide to move from their own home while others find it necessary to do so. Fortunately, there are more options available to meet the housing needs of older adults.

However choosing the most appropriate option can be confusing and time-consuming. How can seniors and their families make "moves of choice" rather than "moves of necessity"?

Maureen will explain:

  • Housing options: understanding the jargon
  • How to talk to your parents about moving
  • Strategies to decide when/where to move

Not so Empty Nest

Boomers and young seniors are experiencing "boomerang kids:" young adults returning home.  If this describes your family, you will want to explore the facts and myths.

Maureen will explain:

  • Factors that contribute to success and
  • Strategies for happy households with boomerang kids

Should I Move in with my Children?

When life takes an unexpected turn, our options are altered. For seniors, widowhood or a health-related crisis may precipitate a change in living arrangements.

Maureen will explain:

  • The qualities that allow families to live well in intergenerational households
  • How to decide if this living arrangement is right for you

      SMART Conversations
How often do you find yourself saying -
"Why won't my parents listen to me?"
"How do I get them to do what I want?"
This session presents a new look at an old problem - communicating. You will learn how to influence someone that you care about.  You will learn tips on handling conversations about difficult topics. This presentation will help adult children who worry about parents who are doing things - or not doing things - that cause concern.
